Let’s get this shindig started!

in Democrat, Libertarian, Politics, Republican

First and foremost, welcome to my new blog. I’ve finally extricated myself from Blogger and moved to WordPress, and I’m very happy to have a fresh start. That said, I wanted to thank all the folks that are coming with me here to the new blog from Mexijew.com.  Your continued patronage is appreciated.  I’ll try my best to continue earning your attention a few minutes here and there.

A few hours ago as I was on my way home from work I heard someone on my XM radio discussing peoples true political leanings, explaining that many people who call themselves “moderate democrats” or “moderate republicans” would really find themselves to be more in line with the “label” of libertarian.  While I’ve heard the term libertarian many times, I’ve never really bothered to go and look up exactly what it meant.  Until tonight, anyway.  I did a little research on Wikipedia, found The Worlds Smallest Political Quiz, and as it turns out I’m just slightly left-of-center libertarian.

So, what is a libertarian?  As I understand it, a libertarian is a person who believes that personal civil rights are imperative and should not be infringed upon by the government, that free trade with all nations should be maintained and be as unregulated as possible across the markets, that borders should be open (I’m not for that particular one…), and that people should, in general, simply be allowed to go and do what they want, when they want, so long as they aren’t doing harm to others.  So, when you think about it, most moderates really do probably fit into the libertarian category.

Anyway, keep your eyes here over the next few weeks for major changes to the site.  I’ve still got a few pages to create (like a good contact page, my portfolio, and my resume), plus I want to move from using a modified template-based design to my own design.  Seems only natural since I’m a web designer, eh? ;)

By the way, if you know my father give him a call sometime this weekend and congratulate him on his upcoming marriage this weekend.  I’ve very proud and happy to be his best man and to be welcoming Susan into the Savage family.

  1. Congrats to your dad on his marriage!! Weddings always get me excited.

I took the political test, and I scored as a centerist. I’m not sure how accurate that is since some of the issues I voted maybe or disagree with since I’m not aware of the side-effects if the status quo was changed. (Like privatizing retirement, for example). “Centrists pride themselves on keeping an open mind, tend to oppose “political extremes,” and emphasize what they describe as “practical” solutions to problems.” Seems accurate enough to me, though!

And nice new blog, btw :) WordPress is totally > Blogger! =P

  2. Thanks much for the good wishes for my dad. I’m very proud/happy for him. He’s met a wonderful woman who has brought him a lot more happiness than I’ve ever seen him experience. It makes the world seem a little better.

The politics test isn’t exactly a “be all, end all” kind of test. It’s really a baseline test to see where you stand on a very small group of issues, but really isn’t complete. Stuff like gun rights, abortion, etc aren’t on that quiz, so it’s not really great for truly figuring out where you are. It’s really just to give you an idea of where you stand on a few of the more “social” issues.

I think a lot of people in our particular age groups fall under centrist or libertarian, simply because we’ve been brought up in a time that’s really in transition. When I was born the cold war was in its last decade, the values of the USA were finally spreading to the rest of the world, and people were just starting to use computers on a “personal” basis. My parents are democrats, but I was raised to appreciate that the world isn’t just black and white. All of those things colored my early opinions on politics.

Now that I’ve voted in two elections and had a chance to experience real life and real politics, my ideals and beliefs have shifted a little further right. Libertarian fits me, I think.

p.s. Coming soon I shall be recording a rap called “My Son Rolled Horde”. Look for it soon on a blog near you!

  4. I hate to mention the “R” word but I am a slightly-to-the-right libertarian. based on where I stand on economic issues. I agree that most liberals are libertarian more than democrat, but as long as the democratic party has more money (and they do!) that is where I am placing my votes.
